First 20 Years
1993 - 2013
Researched by Don Hayes

1993 - 1997

On 11 September 1993 a meeting was held in the Dr Mackay Community Centre, Moruya. There, a group of seventeen orchid growing enthusiasts decided to form an orchid club. This Club was to be named the EUROBODALLA ORCHID CLUB INC.

Thus the  Eurobodalla Orchid Club was established.

Allan Read chaired the meeting and called for positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. Allan Read was elected as President. Jenny Best was elected as Secretary and Win Bailey the Treasurer.

Later, Allan Read said that he "had a goal over the past 13 years to establish an orchid club in the Eurobodalla”. Now that goal has been achieved.

Other business resulted in the annual fees being established at $8.00 per person or $10.00 per family. Club Meetings would be held on the second Saturday of each month at 1pm, initially at members' homes on a rotating basis, until a permanent venue was found. The next Club Meeting was to be held at the home of Tom Roach of Mossy Point where membership applications and subscriptions would be accepted.

The inaugural meeting of the Eurobodalla Orchid Club was attended by:

Allan Read, Jenny Best, Tom Roach, Rita Beer, Betty Fullerton, Joy Linden, Dave Davies, Alex Brand, Kay Brand, Kay Watts, Edna Forbes, Barbara Sinclair, Ron Limbrey, Elsa Limbrey, Win Bailey, Doug Bailey.

Much was achieved during the formative and following years of the Club, including the design of a club badge.

The club emblem was chosen, a Cattleya - Blc.Malworth 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS.

Meetings moved to the night of the second Thursday of each month and held at the Moruya Uniting Church Hall at the cost of $10.00 per nigh

Inaugural Patron: Joy Linden

The first committee was elected in December 1993.

       President:             Allan Read

Vice President:     Joan MacLennan

Committee:          Alex Brand, Kay Brand, Kay Watts, Lynette Toll,

                                  Terry Toll, Alf Nucifora

During 1994 incorporation, affiliation with New South Wales Orchid Society (NSWOS) and insurance was resolved.

The club gratefully accepted the donation of a large number of orchid books, as well as plants, from Joy Linden’s friends Bruce and Pat Davies (members of Canberra Orchid Club).

The books were for the Club Library and Tom Roach offered to act as the Club Librarian; the plants went for sale.

Norma Stafford of Kalaru Orchid Nursery was the Club's first guest speaker.  Norma spoke of the benefits of belonging to an affiliated orchid club.

In March 1994, John Apperly gave a talk including the topic of fertilizers and potting mixes with a slide show of various orchids.

On  May 7th 1994 members visited Norma Stafford for an orchid workshop at her nursery in Kalaru.

The Club's first major display was held in the CWA Hall, Moruya on 23 & 24 September, 1994, in conjunction with the Twin Lakes Bonsai Club.

The rest of the year followed with members displaying their plants on Club nights, taking care of their competition plants, visiting other clubs and enjoying one another’s company.

The first AGM was held in the Uniting Church Hall, Page Street Moruya on 10 November 1994.

Allan Read, in his President's report, acknowledged the invaluable support to the Club by not only the management committee but also John Apperly, from Nowra Orchid Club and from Sapphire Coast Orchid Club's  Norma Stafford, Wilma Squires, Maureen Cochrane and Brain Blakely.

He highlighted the sales table and the raffles as major fund boosters to the club.

The elections then took place and as only one nomination was received for each position the following were elected to the Management Committee.

President:               Alex Brand

Vice President:          Joan MacLennan

Secretary:                  Allen Read

Treasurer:               Alf Nucifora

Committee:                  Patty Parker, Kay Watts.  H Davies, D Davies, Kay Brand

A program of possible events for 1995 was considered with suggestions of an annual orchid show, speakers for Club nights, advertisement for the Club, orchid displays, the formation of Club bylaws, a Show Marshal and sponsorship for show prizes, also a Club auction.

Kay Brand was appointed Show Marshal in June to arrange for the inaugural show in September 1995.

This show was held in the CWA Hall, Moruya with 205 plants exhibited. Prizes were sponsored by members.

A special bar and badge was struck for this the inaugural show of the Eurobodalla Orchid Club.

To increase exposure of the Club to the general public, a display of orchids was held at Batemans Bay Plaza prior to the show and the Club joined the local radio 2EARFM.

This proved very successful with the acquisition off 31 new members.

On  9 August 1995 a special meeting was called for consideration and approval by members of the Club's bylaws.

In October the Club Meeting nights were changed to the second Wednesday of each month.

We became affiliated with the AOC.

Allan Read was presented with a Meritorious Service Award badge.

Another successful year came to a conclusion with the Club's second AGM.

This once again took place in the Uniting Church Hall, Moruya on  8 November 1995.

One nomination was received for each position on the management committee.

The following were elected:

President:                     Alex Brand

Vice President:             Joan MacLennan

Secretary:                    Shenah Gellibrand

Treasurer:                    John Gellibrand

Committee:                  Tom Adams, Helen Davies, David Davies,

                                     Kay Brand, Theo Schutz,

Allan Read continued to be the Public Officer and Kay Brand the Show Marshal.

Theo Schutz accepted the responsibility of producing the monthly newsletter.

It was decided that the draft minutes of the previous meeting be included with the newsletter.

Theo and Jenny also donated two doors so that the manufacture of club tables could commence.

An activities sheet for 1996 was handed out to members.

The Club’s first orchid crawl was conducted, a BBQ was held in May and another workshop was held at Kaluru by Norma Stafford.

From May 1996 the venue for Club meetings changed to the CWA Hall in Queen St, Moruya, as the club had outgrown the space in the Uniting Church Hall.

For her work involving the presentation of the inaugural show in 1995 Kay Brand was presented with a Meritorious Service Award.

Activities for 1996 included an orchid crawl and BBQ in May.

Displays were arranged for Moruya and Narooma to advertise the now annual orchid show in Moruya.

In August a special general meeting was held where the members adopted a Club Constitution, rules for members and rules for shows. These were prepared and presented by John Gellibrand. Also the Department of Fair Trading was advised.

A trip to John Apperley’s nursery in Nowra was arranged for 17 November.

The third AGM was held on 13th November 1996.

The following were elected:

President:                Alex Brand

Vice President:        Don Hayes

Secretary:                Shenah Gellibrand

Treasurer:               John Gellibrand

Committee:              Tom Adams, Kay Brand, Margaret Hayes,

                                Theo Schutz, Rayeleane Spackman

A Christmas hamper, made up of donated items by Club Members, was raffled at the Christmas break-up party held at Alex and Kay’s home at Bodalla.

At the first meeting in February 1997 Ted Beehag was welcomed as visiting speaker. Ted spoke about Odontoglossums, with a slide presentation.

A social outing was also arranged on 23 February at Foxglove Spires at Tilba Tilba and another day with Sapphire Coast Orchid Club with a BBQ at Bermagui in April.

Theo and Jenny Schutz were now to compete in the open section of the club after their very successful novice period.

As an incentive to novice growers the monthly plant of the night awards will now be divided into Open and Novice classes.

The Club was also advised that “Orchid Heaven 97,” the biannual South and West Regional Show and Conference, would be held in the Bega Town Hall in October 1997.

Ideas for the Club’s display resulted in suggestions that the title seemed to imply angels, churches a stairway to heaven or pearly gates opening to a view of orchids.

The Club's display at the show took second place. First place went to Canberra Orchid Society. Many members received first and second places in their respective sections. The Club was well represented.

A Club sign, together with stand and carrying case, was manufactured by Don Hayes and presented to the club so that club displays may be identified.

To further establish a Club image, it was decided to adopt Club shirts with Club emblem, and a pale yellow shirt was finally chosen.

Theo Schutz was appointed ‘club photographer.’ He was to photograph winning plants at each meeting and keep an album to record progress.

Kevin Wilson from Sydney was the speaker at the April meeting where it was also decided that rosettes be introduced at the show for Grand Champion, Reserve Champion and Novice Champion.

In recognition of his works for the club Alex Brand was presented with the Meritorious Service Award at the Club’s meeting in May 1997.

A special wooden gavel and striker plate, crafted by Paul Hayes, was presented to the Club, by Margaret and Don Hayes, for use by the President.

It was decided that the name of past Presidents be applied to the edge of the striker plate.

John Apperley as speaker for the night gave a talk and showed slides on his trip to Rio de Janeiro where he attended the World Orchid Exhibition.

Another workshop was held at Alex and Kay Brand’s at Bodalla and more planned for the venue. Alex and Kay Brand  passed their judges' exams; there are now two Associate Judges in the Club

On 28 & 29 June 1997 Club Members went on an excursion to Peats Ridge to visit Kevin Hipkins' orchid nursery ‘Royale Orchids,’ where quite a number of orchids were purchased by Club Members.

Displays were once again held at Bridge Plaza, Batemans Bay and Narooma Plaza prior to the Club's Spring Show for 1997.

At the show 265 plants were presented for judging.

Kevin Hipkins of ‘Royale Orchids’ was the speaker in October. He came with plenty of plants for sale for he was on his way to Bega as one of the speaker at Orchid Heaven 1997 conference.

Another orchid crawl was arranged for November, starting at Allan Reid’s in Moruya then onto Tom and Elaine Kelly’s at Tuross Head, the next Theo and Jenny Schutz's place in Dalmeny and finishing at Margaret and Don Hayes' in Narooma...a very full day.

The 1997 AGM resulted in the following being elected to the club committee.

Vice President:             Don Hayes

Secretary:                     Shenah Gellibrand

Treasurer:                     John Gellibrand
